I’ve been noticing something, as I continue my day-to-day work with high school seniors. It’s become really frequent to have juniors and seniors learning American Sign Language as their language component, and I love it! It’s opening up so many opportunities for people in the deaf or hard of hearing communities, to have these wonderful advocates able to translate or assist. I am so thankful it’s become more prevalent, and proud of the loving young people who endeavor to help others with their new skill. Mackenzie is part of the ASL Honor Society, and hopes to implement this caring spirit with her future career aspirations: to become a kindergarten teacher. She is such a beautiful and loving young lady, and the Class of 2021 is better because of her part of it. She is attending Lake Mary High School, where she is also part of the national honor society, and the beta club. In addition, she’s been honored as a “honor graduate recipient”. She invests time and talent into her grateful community, where she works with New Hope for Kids to brighten up needy family’s holidays. She also helps as an assistant at a local performing arts studio. Her free time is pretty limited, but she enjoys dancing, decorating her room, and doing workout classes at Orange Theory when she’s able.
I took her older sister’s senior photos as well, and always love when a family asks me back to capture another milestone. Mackenzie wanted a similar session, and asked that it be, “light, positive, and fun”…we were definitely able to make all those things happen. This sweet girl describes herself as someone who is very sentimental, and so she’s been treasuring the last few months of high school. I think her friends are really lucky to have such a special girl in their midst. Mackenzie adds, “I’ve learned that you shouldn’t have to change yourself for others. If you alter your personality to fit in with a group, you will never be satisfied with yourself or find a true group of caring friends.” She will be attending the University of Alabama this fall, where she plans to enjoy the school spirit, gorgeous campus, and become immersed in sorority life! I know she will be amazing! Roll Tide!
